Hay mil apuntes en la libreta de este fin de semana. Podíamos escribirlo todo y publicarlo, o ir haciéndolo poco a poco. Nos hemos decidido por la segunda opción. Así, nosotros tendremos más tiempo para escribir y madurar toda la información que hemos compartido, y vosotros no os encontraréis con un documento de varias páginas de longitud. Aquí va el primer artículo.  Esperamos que esta serie de artículos refleje bien lo apasionante que es el desarrollo de una tecnología con una filosofía de trabajo tan distinta a la tradicional.

There are thousand notes in the notebook of this weekend. We could write everything and publish it, or be doing it step by step. We have been decided by the second option. Thus, we will have more time to write and to settle down all the information that we have shared, and you will not have to face with a document of several pages length. Here is the first post.  We hope that this series of articles reflects the exciting that is the development of a technology with a work philosophy so different from the traditional one.

Viernes. Hora de salida: 7.20am. Viaje largo, muy largo, con muchas esperanzas puestas en todo lo que vamos a vivir durante este fin de semana. Por delante tenemos 14 horas de viaje y muchas cosas que queremos hacer. Estamos concienciados de que no podremos bloguear las conferencias (es prácticamente imposible hacerlo en vivo) y que con un tweet se pierden miles de detalles, de impresiones, que son imposibles de contar en 140 caracteres. Hace falta más espacio. Mucho más.

Llegamos a Kilkenny cerca de las 8 de la tarde, ya instalados, para asistir a la cena de ponentes y patrocinadores. Primero, una cervecita con las chicas. Después, elegir mesa. Nos sentamos con Jane Wells (UI Goddess), Paul Gibbs , Joost de Valk, Sheri Bigelow y Hanni Ross. No estuvo mal elegida ;).

Durante la cena (amenizada por Adam, el hijo de Donncha, que no paraba de pasearse por nuestra mesa) estuvimos hablando de unas cuantas cosas (casi todas gracias al pie que nos daba Joost, que no paraba de preguntar):

1) Core para plugins.

WordPress tendrá en breve una API en la que podremos encontrar una buena lista de funciones para utilizar en la creación de nuestros plugins. Estará incluida en el núcleo de WordPress, y se añadirá toda la información a la página de Plugin API que ya existe.

2) WordCamp SF.

Como sabréis, ya tiene fecha. La lista de ponentes de esta WordCamp viene directamente de la mano de Matt, lo que nos asegura la mejor calidad posible y que se revele mucha información acerca del futuro de WordPress, WordPress MU, BuddyPress y del resto de proyectos de Automattic.

3) BuddyPress.

Escuchamos en la mesa hablar de una posible integración de BuddyPress en el núcleo de WordPress. En Mecus llevamos un tiempo pensando en el tema, y en la mesa se ven confirmadas nuestras sospechas. Aunque tiene mucho sentido, no la vemos demasiado viable por varias cuestiones:

• Todavía estamos trabajando en la fusión de WP y WP-MU.
• BuddyPress es un plugin fácilmente instalable. No tendría sentido incluir más peso en el núcleo teniendo esa facilidad de instalación.
• No todo el mundo quiere instalar una red social (en contra de este argumento, también podemos decir que no todo el mundo quiere instalar un WordPress multiusuario y en la nueva instalación tendremos esa opción).

La cuestión está bien documentada, por supuesto. Si se ha hablado de esta posibilidad es porque en un futuro muy cercano, cuando queramos instalar WordPress, nos preguntará si lo que queremos instalar es un WordPress o un WordPress multiusuario. ¿Por qué no preguntarnos si queremos instalar una red social directamente? (Este tema lo abordaremos más adelante, cuando tratemos la charla de BuddyPress).

Lo que sí está claro es que BuddyPress estará incluído en el Codex de WordPress.org, y no como proyecto aparte como hasta ahora. Cada vez toma más relevancia.

4) Las chicas de Automattic.

Son geniales. Todas. Es muy agradable compartir con ellas una cena, unas cervezas, o lo que propongan. Están muy metidas en su trabajo: siempre están hablando de WordPress. Y han incluido a nuestro enviado especial en la lista de sus WP Evangelists. 😉

5) VideoPress.

El nuevo servicio de Automattic está pegando fuerte. Aunque tienen claro que para ellos es y será deficitario (económicamente hablando), también tienen claro que en el momento actual debían sacar un servicio de soporte de vídeo en HD distinto a WordPress.tv para WordPress y el resto de servicios de Automattic.

VideoPress ya está funcionando en WordPress.com, y dentro de muy poco veremos aparecer un plugin con widget asociado para todos los blogs de instalación externa y para servicios que no estén asociados a WordPress. Todo aquel que quiera podrá hacer uso de VideoPress en cualquier plataforma, sin necesidad de que esté asociada a WordPress o a otros servicios de Automattic.

6) GPL.

SEO y GPL han sido las palabras más repetidas de la WordCamp. También le dedicaremos un apartado propio, como a BuddyPress.

Friday. Time of departure: 7.20am. Very long trip, with many hopes put in what we are going to live during this weekend. Ahead we have 14 hours of trip and many things that we want to do. We are aware of that we will not be able to blog the conferences (it’s practically impossible to do it live) and that using twitter we will lose thousands of details, of impressions, that are impossible to transmit in 140 characters. We need more space. Much more.

We arrived at Kilkenny about 8pm, already unpacked, to attend to the speakers & sponsors dinner. First, some beer with the Automattic girls. And then, time to choose table to have dinner. We sat down with Jane Wells (UI Goddess), Paul Gibbs , Joost de Valk, Sheri Bigelow & Hanni Ross. Not a bad election ;).

During the dinner (brightened up by Adam, Donncha‘s son, who didn’t stop talking and playing) we were speaking about a few things (thanks to Joost, who did not stop asking):

1) Core Plugins.

WordPress will shortly have an API in which we will be able to find a great list of functions to use in the creation of our plugins. It will be including in the WordPress core, and all the information will be added to the page of Plugin API that already exists.

2) WordCamp SF.

As you will sure know, we already have a date for WordCamp SF. Speakers list of this WordCamp is directly done by Matt, which assures us the best-ever quality possible and to be revealed a lot of information about the future of WordPress, WordPress MU, BuddyPress and the other projects of Automattic.

3) BuddyPress.

We were talking about the possible integration of BuddyPress in the WordPress Core. We have been discussing about this in Mecus last month, and now they have confirmed our suspicions. Although it makes sense, we do not like this path by several reasons:

• We are already working in the merging of WP and WP-MU.
• BuddyPress is an easy-to-install plugin. It have not sense to include more weight to the core having 1-click-install.
• Not everybody wants to install a social network (we have the contrary argument: not everybody wants to install a multiuser WordPress and it’s an installation option).

But it makes sense for WordPress people, of course. If we are talking about this possibility it’s becausse in the near future, when we want to install WordPress, it will ask us if what we want to install (single-user) WordPress or a multiuser WordPress. Why not to ask then if we want to install a social network? (We will talk about it in a future BuddyPress article).

We are aware that BuddyPress will be included in the Codex of WordPress.org, and won’t be a separate project like now. It’s getting more relevance everyday.

4) The Automattic girls.

They are brilliant. All of them. It’s very pleasant and an honor to share with them a dinner, beers, or whatever they propose. They are very concerned about their job: they are always speaking about WordPress. And they have included to our special agent in their list of their WP Evangelists. 😉

5) VideoPress.

The new service of Automattic is beating hard. Although they know clearly that for them it’s not a profitable project, they also know that, by now, they had to offer a video service with HD support in addition to WordPress.tv for WordPress and the rest of services of Automattic.

VideoPress is already working in WordPress.com, and we will soon see a plugin with widget for all the blogs of external installations and services that are not associated to WordPress. Everyone who wants to use VideoPress will be able to do that, in any platform, and without the need of being associated to WordPress or to other services of Automattic.

6) GPL.

SEO & GPL have been the most repeated words of the WordCamp. We will dedicate them its own section, like to BuddyPress.
